Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Training

Hazardous/Emergency ResponseEmployees designated to participate in emergency response operations must be trained in the following courses:

40-Hour Hazardous Waste Site Safety Worker Training

This course meets the requirements for training those engaged in hazardous waste operations at Superfund, RCRA remediation, or state and local government designated sites. It provides basic information on the protection and safety of personnel engaged in field operations dealing with hazardous substances. The course topics include:

  • Fundamentals of hazard recognition
  • Toxicology
  • Use and limitations of direct-read monitoring instruments
  • Selection, use, and limitation of personal protective equipment

The training consists of lecture, demonstrations, problem solving and discussion with hands-on use of personal protective equipment

8-Hour Hazardous Waste Site Supervisor Training

This class meets the requirements for training hazardous waste site operations managers and supervisors. The course topics include:

  • Site Survey and Reconnaissance
  • Project Planning
  • Public Relations
  • Air Monitoring
  • Reporting and Record-keeping
  • Site Safety Plan

Prerequisite: Completion of the 40-hour hazardous waste site worker-training program

8-Hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker Training Refresher

This course fulfills the annual refresher training requirements for employees engaged in hazardous waste operations. The course content includes:

  • Updates of state federal regulations
  • Decontamination and exposure guidelines
  • Respirator protection
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Medical surveillance
  • Hazard recognition and evaluation

24-Hour Emergency Response Operations

This course meets the requirements for training personnel engaged in emergency response operations. It provides basic information on the protection and safety issues involved in field operations dealing with hazardous substances. The course topics include:

  • Fundamentals of hazard recognition
  • Toxicology
  • Use and limitations of direct-read monitoring instruments
  • Selection, use and limitation of personal protective equipment

The training consists of lecture, demonstrations, problem solving and discussion with hands-on use of personal equipment.

On-Site Incident Commander

Incident Commanders will be trained in procedures to assume control of the incident scene

The course optics include:

  • Implementation of the employer’s incident command system
  • Implementation of the site emergency response plan
  • Knowledge and comprehension of the potential hazards and risks associated with working in chemical protective clothing
  • Coordination with the local emergency response team
  • Knowledge and comprehension of the state, regional, and federal emergency response plan
  • Knowledge and comprehension of the importance of decontamination procedures

24-Hour Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) Operations Training

This three-day program meets the specific needs of those employees assigned to operations within TSD facilities. The course presents information on performing daily activities in a safe and healthful manner. Course topics include:

  • Health and safety programs
  • Hazard communications
  • Federal and state regulations
  • Drum handling
  • Site control measures
  • Transportation
  • Spill/leak control and containment
  • Emergency response and evacuation

8-Hour Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) Operations Training Refresher

This course fulfills the annual refresher training requirements for employees assigned to operations within TSD facilities. The course topics include:

  • Health and safety program updates
  • Respiratory protection and PPE
  • Regulatory updates
  • Emergency recognition and responsibility
